Day at the Capitol schedule examples
From 2007 Day at the Capitol
Amanda from St. Scholastica
7:30-8:00am — Picked up a delicious Perkins Breakfast sponsored by the school!
8:00am — Leave campus on 2 coach buses. We had an informational meeting with pamphlets on each person's representative and what to expect during the day. We learned what to say to each representative during this session. We also learned more about the Minnesota State Grant Program.
10:45am — Arrive at the capitol and get more information from our MAPCS lobbyist. We also met with Scholastica's district House representative, Mary Murphy.
11:30am — Meeting with my house representative.
12:15pm — Lunch break; school sponsors our lunch at the Capitol.
1:00pm — Continue meeting with my state representative.
1:30pm — Group gathers back at the meeting room along with Bethel University to discuss what worked during the day, challenges, and what we would like to change in the future. This day was a learning experience — and I know how to lobby now!
2:00pm — Hop onto the bus and head back to Duluth.
4:30pm — Arrive on campus
Matt from Gustavus Adolphus
8:00am — Depart from St. Peter to State Capitol in St. Paul. On the bus ride up, we heard from organizers on what to expect during the day and got to ask questions about the State Grant Program.
10:00am — Our delegation from Gustavus met Dennis from the Minnesota Private College Council, who gave us information on the State Grant Program and calmed our nerves about meeting one-on-one with our legislators.
11:30am — Meeting with my House Representative in her office.
12:00pm — I had to pull my Senate Representative off of the Senate floor, but I had the opportunity to meet with him and tell him the importance of the State Grant Program and how I am affected by it.
12:15pm — Break time for lunch in the Department of Transportation building and a chance to walk around the Capitol.
1:00pm — The Private College students from Gustavus, St. Catherine and St. Thomas gathered to hear from a couple of key lawmakers. We also got tips on what we can do on our own campuses to support the State Grant Program.
3:00pm — The Minnesota Historical Society gave the Gustavus delegation a tour of the State Capitol (something that I bet you haven't done since fourth grade).
4:45pm — The Gustavus group had dinner at Khan's Mongolian Barbecue in Bloomington which was sponsored by our Campus Activities Board.
7:30pm — After a long day, we arrived back on campus.
